World Understanding and Peace Day takes place on February 23 every year. This meeting of businessmen, beginning with Attorney Paul P. Harris, calling the first meeting with his business friends, Gustavus Loehr, Silvestor Schiele, and Hiram Shorey, on Feb. 23, 1905, in a downtown office building in Chicago. The aim was for a gathering of people where their backgrounds did not matter. They decided to call their club Rotary because the locations for their meeting would "Rotate."
