Diwali was celebrated with great pomp and ceremony on Monday October 28th with more than 40 members joining with their families and friends. It was a wonderful occasion of sharing laughter, fellowship and the spirit of Diwali.
Mr. Vikram Nair is a Singaporean politician and lawyer. A member of the governing People's Action Party, he has been the Member of Parliament representing the Admiralty division of Sembawang GRC since 2011.
We welcome Mr. Nair's strong arm and strong heart for service in joining RCQ to lend a hand in making a better world through Rotary.
Polio (poliomyelitis) mainly affects children under 5 years of age.
One in 200 infections leads to irreversible paralysis. Among those paralysed, 5–10% die when their breathing muscles become immobilized.
Cases due to wild poliovirus have decreased by over 99% since 1988, from an estimated 350 000 cases in more than 125 endemic countries, to just two endemic countries.
As long as a single child remains infected, children in all countries are at risk of contracting polio. Failure to eradicate polio from these last remaining strongholds could result in a global resurgence of the disease.
In most countries, the global effort has expanded capacities to tackle other infectious diseases by building effective surveillance and immunization systems.

Stateless unemployed youth who has never gone to school lands job offer

Stateless youth Ricqo Rafiezuwan once likened his existence to that of a ghost – his presence known to and noticed by only a few people.
Without formal education, jobless and strapped for cash, the 25-year-old felt inferior. He rarely left the Clementi estate, where he lives and grew up, and has never stepped out of Singapore.
That changed after The Straits Times reported in Septemberon the challenges he and two other stateless individuals faced living here without citizenship or permanent residency, from rules that prevented them from opening bank accounts to uncertainty over healthcare provisions. The report sparked an outpouring of support – from offers of help with the English language and training to jobs and meals at restaurants...
This was until the founder and chief executive of The Assembly Place, Mr Eugene Lim, saw the report and contacted ST and the Foundation of Rotary Clubs Singapore Family Service Centre (FRCS FSC) in Clementi. 2. Polio is a highly infectious disease that most commonly affects children under the age of 5. The virus is spread person to person, typically through contaminated water. It can attack the nervous system, and in some instances, lead to paralysis. Although there is no cure, there is a safe and effective vaccine – one which Rotary and our partners use to immunize over 2.5 billion children worldwide. It recommends that children get 4 doses of polio vaccine, one at each of the following ages, to protect them against severe polio disease, including paralysis:
1st dose: 2 months old
2nd dose: 4 months old
3rd dose: 6-18 months old
4th does: 4-6 Years old
There are two types of vaccines that protect against polio:
(a) Inactivated polio vaccine (IPV), given by shot in the leg or arm, depending on the patient's age.
(b) Oral polio vaccine (OPV), Children receive doses of the vaccine by drops in the mouth. OPV is no longer licensed or available in the United States. It is still used in many parts of the world.
3. 3-H stands for Health, Hunger and Humanity Grants, which is a Rotary Foundation Grant fundinglarge-scale, two- to four-year projects that improve health, alleviate hunger, or promote human development. Since 1978, more than 280 projects in 75 countries have been funded through the Rotary Foundation at a cost of $74 million.
